What do osteoclasts arise from?

Monocytes

Osteoclasts come from the monocyte/macrophage lineage in the hematopoietic system. They form when monocyte-derived precursors fuse under signals such as M-CSF and RANKL, becoming multinucleated cells that resorb bone. This lineage distinction explains why osteoclasts are not from osteoblasts (bone-forming cells from mesenchymal stem cells), fibroblasts (mesenchymal-derived connective tissue cells), or chondrocytes (cartilage cells).
